Gone Fishin'

Isaac rode his bike from Chicago's Daley Plaza to the Three Floyds Brewery in Munster, Indiana with a few friends. Here he considers lunch before the second leg of the ride.
Back to the city.

This neighborhood in Northwest Indiana found itself in several feet of flood water after the passage of hurricane Ike. We've had hurricane remnants come through before, but not with the system still relatively intact, as Ike was.
This is suburban Chicago, after all. 7"-10" of rain later, Interstate 80 was flooded and closed for a week, a large clinic and extended care facility was evacuated to surrounding hospitals (my mother among them- she's fine) and these people are just recently getting back into their homes. about 1000 residences were affected. Only in the recent days are they coming to discover the level of devastation. Many, many of the homes have been "red tagged" for foundation failures. I don't know about your homeowner's insurance policy, but mine doesn't include flood damage unless I add it as an expensive rider. Many of these people are financially hosed. One home exploded, leaving a crater in the middle of the block with three charred studs sticking up out of the rubble and deposited chunks of itself on surrounding rooftops. Still, the community has pulled together. Neighbors visit as they carry carpeting, drywall, insulation, toys, furniture, appliances and lumber out to the street. They sign up to volunteer for food deliveries. They help each other.
They move forward.

ACScott Swampy Find

Sadly I looked in vain for this one a week earlier (using an old Garmin GPS 45) and could not find it. I did however find the hundreds of Mosquitoes. I returned with ACScott and he braved the Mosquitoes and found the prize. GC142DJ
